Tom grew up on small farm in Southeastern Minnesota. The farm had a small group of trees that harbored deer and other small mammals. It was here that his appreciation of the outdoors started. Tom spent his free time in that grove observing the deer, birds and other animals for hours.
He started late for a photographer, not buying a camera until the age of 22. One year later and self-taught he was working as a newspaper photographer while finishing college with a Forestry and Wildlife Management degree.
After working for a couple of newspapers as a photographer/writer he moved to Jackson in 2001, taking over layout duties for the Jackson Hole Daily. Working as a layout artist and not a photographer allows Tom to pursue the photographic subjects that interest him. Working four days at the paper, Tom spends his days off and some mornings before work hiking and exploring the Greater Yellowstone area with his camera gear along side.
“I started taking photographs to share what I’m seeing on my hikes,” says Tom. “I love sharing my knowledge of the outdoors with others. If I can show animal behavior or something about a landscape not normally seen, it will hopefully spark an interest in people about the wildlife and area that surrounds them.”
