Jackson Hole is the common name for the broad-based valley that lies at 6,200 feet above sea level. Jackson Hole is sandwiched between two mountain ranges: the Tetons to the west, the Gros Ventres to the east and is bisected by the Snake River. The Town of Jackson (not Jackson Hole) is situated on the eastern edge of the valley near its southern end.The popularity of Jackson Hole rose quickly with the invention of the automobile. Tourists headed to Yellowstone country made a visit to Jackson Hole and Grand Teton National Park an important part of a family's trip to Yellowstone Country. The rise of winter recreation and the ski industry gave further impetus to growth in Jackson Hole. Jackson Hole remains a small, albeit growing, town where outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the conveniences of modern living combined with the spirit of the old west.
